Crime Fighter Joe Arpaio Love him or hate him, Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio is doing what he does best getting people to talk about crime and how to prevent it — and punish it when it hasn’t been prevented. As the main man responsible for law enforcement in Maricopa County (greater Phoenix), Arpaio seems most famous for setting up a “tent city” in the desert region where inmates service their time in heat that can often exceed 110 degrees. What is Arpaio’s response to any complaints he receives? He simply states that “it’s 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents, have to wear full body armor, and they didn’t commit any crimes, so shut your mouths.”Abrupt? Perhaps. But undoubtedly true.So when Arpaio’s controversial practices (which include inmates having to wear pink underwear) come under fire from agencies such as Amnesty International and the American Civil Liberties Union, there is rock solid ammunition that his actions are not abusive if our soldiers are enduring similar situations. One of Arpaio’s most noteworthy comments about his famous tent city is that the “vacancy sign is always on.”In fact, the security tower that overlooks the entire facility has a pink neon vacancy sign that reminds everyone who sees it police, inmates, and even critics that there’s always room at “Arpaio’s Inn.”So the next time you hear someone bemoaning the overcrowded prison conditions in America, point them in the direction of Joe Arpaio a man who has never heard a problem without having a solution at the ready and take a closer look at our vast desert region.
