A Review of “Guide to Careers in Federal Law Enforcement” by Thomas Ackerman

So you’re interested in a career with Federal Law Enforcement and don’t know where to start. Well, let starts by asking yourself what agency are you interested in?
Here is a list and brief discription of a few of the the major agencies:
1. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – The FBI investigates things like bank roberies, kidnapping, treason, civil rights violations, extortions, and the assaulting or killing of any Federal Government employee.

2. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) – The DEA deals with the law relating to the unlawful distribution and use of narcotics such as heroin, opium, marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogenes, and synthetic (man made) narcotics such as methamphetamines and barbiturates. The main emphasis is on stopping the the narcotics trade at the source both in the United States and abroad. They fight in the war against drugs. Agents may work a significant amount of their careers undercover.

3. U.S. Postal Service Inspector – investigates illegal activities involving the mail. These may include mail theft, mail fraud, and illegal drug trafficking or money laundering through the mails.

4. Deputy United States Marshals – supervise the security of Federal Court Proceedings by maintaining order, guarding prisoners, and serving orders of the courts. They also run the Federal Witness Protection Program, and transport all Federal Prisoners to court proceedings, as well as transport inmates from one Federal Prison to another.
