Is Detroit’s Crime as Bad as The Media Would Have Us Believe?
The answer is yes, and no. There is crime in Detroit, just like any other major city. In fact, whether people realize it or not, crime is in every urban, suburban and rural area, especially in a trying economy. So, yes; there is crime in Detroit. The real question is how bad it is compared to other large cities.
For years, decades even, Detroit has had to bear the brunt of many jokes. The city has stood by while its reputation has been marred by reports of it being the Murder Capital of the World. The local and national media always seems to interview a frightened suburbanite on All Hallows Eve, who vehemently insists he would never travel into the city, as if even the mere suggestion is blasphemy.
The truth is Detroit does not even rank in the top 10 of crime-troubled cities. Surprised? The F.B.I. publishes a list of the top cities for violent crimes each year and Detroit is no longer on that list. The media likes to jump on any minor incident and blow it out of proportion to sell their evening news to the viewers. In fact, residents know that if you are aware of your surroundings, use basic common sense and don’t explore dark alleys in the middle of the night, Detroit is perfectly safe.
